He is author of The nonprofit and voluntary sector in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Territories : Regional highlights of the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (Imagine Canada) and co-author of Cornerstones of Community: Highlights of the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (Statistics Canada) and The status of Manitoba’s Voluntary Sector: A Comprehensive Survey (Voluntary and Non-Profit Sector Organization of Manitoba). He has been actively involved for over 30 years in service delivery, management, program development, policy analysis, program evaluation and organizational leadership, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, School of Social Welfare. Sid is currently chairperson of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada board, and also serves of the boards of The Boys and Girls Clubs Foundation the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg (Vice President), the Manitoba Research Institute and the Voluntary and Non-Profit Sector Organization of Manitoba. He volunteered as a coach for his son’s baseball team, but it soon became apparent that he knew little about baseball. Although much informal volunteering occurs, most volunteers work within organizational structures, be they non-profit and voluntary sector organizations or public agencies or something in between. Therefore, it is important to consider how the organizations define, support or hamper what volunteers do. Organizations are often thought of as containing various kinds of capital, which provide them with the capacity to accomplish their missions. These include financial capital, structural capital (the organization’s infrastructure and network), human capital (paid staff and volunteers), social capital (the organization’s culture), reputational capital (how the organization is seen in the community), and intellectual capital (the organization’s storehouse of know-how). Volunteers are often thought of only in terms of human capital, and as providing only direct service to the organization’s clients or administrative support. This presentation will explore the broader role that volunteers can play in terms of contributing to assembling and managing the other kinds of capital. This has the potential to maximize volunteer contributions and satisfaction. However, we should not forget about volunteers as human capital and the reality that sport and recreation (and other) voluntary and non-profit organizations have difficulty in recruiting and retaining volunteers, including board members. Therefore, the presentation will examine these issues, and discuss some of their causes and solutions that have been proposed. The research done in sport and recreation will be especially highlighted, and the emphasis will be on practical solutions.
